FAQ

Frequently asked

Everything from audio quality to billing and licensing. If your question isn’t here, write to info@artyfile.com.

Audio & quality

Is the audio really uncompressed?+

Yes. Every track is delivered as 44.1 kHz / 24-bit WAV — the same studio master files our sync-licence customers buy for film and broadcast. No transcoding, no MP3 step. File sizes are 30–60 MB per track depending on length; budget mobile data accordingly.

Can I tell the difference from Spotify Hi-Fi or Tidal?+

Spotify’s "HiFi" tier is currently lossless 16-bit FLAC. Tidal Master is MQA 24-bit. Artyfile delivers raw 24-bit WAV — the same file the mastering engineer signed off on. On a decent DAC and headphones the difference is audible on quiet passages and low-frequency depth. On phone speakers, less so.

Why is the catalogue smaller than Spotify’s?+

Because every track is recorded by professional musicians at full union rates. Spotify hosts 100M+ tracks because the marginal cost of adding a track is near zero; Artyfile’s catalogue grows in the hundreds, not millions, because each track represents real studio sessions paid for by Artyfile.

Subscription & billing

Why does Artyfile Stream cost more than Spotify?+

Spotify pays artists about €0.003 per stream. Artyfile pays artists up to €0.20 per stream — over 60× more — and streams uncompressed WAV files instead of compressed MP3. The price reflects what music actually costs to produce when real orchestras and studios are paid fairly.

What happens when I hit my monthly stream cap?+

You can top up with 100 additional streams for €4.99 at any time, or wait for your subscription to renew next month. Streams do not roll over.

Can I cancel any time?+

Yes. Manage your subscription at stream.artyfile.com/account → Manage billing. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period.

Do you offer a family plan?+

Not yet. The single-device session lock means a single account can’t be effectively shared across a household. A family-tier with 2-3 simultaneous sessions is on the roadmap for Phase 3.

Are refunds available?+

Per EU consumer law, you can cancel within 14 days of subscribing for a full refund — but only if you haven’t streamed any tracks. Once you start using your stream quota, the service is considered consumed. Email info@artyfile.com to request a refund.

Apps & devices

Do I need a separate account for the app?+

No. The same email and password you set up here logs you into the iOS and Android apps. One account, three surfaces (web account / iOS / Android).

Why is there no playback on the website?+

See the /how-it-works page for the long answer. Short version: browsers throttle and transcode WAV; native apps preserve the audio stream, integrate with CarPlay / Android Auto, and run with the screen off.

Can I listen offline?+

Not yet. Offline downloads with persistent rights and quota tracking are technically interesting; we want to ship them right rather than fast. On the roadmap for Phase 3.

Rights, licensing & GEMA

Is Artyfile Stream a sync licence?+

No. Stream is for personal listening only — like Spotify or Apple Music. If you need to use Artyfile music in a film, video, podcast or commercial, that is sync licensing — see artyfile.com (the parent site) for catalogue + sync-rights pricing.

How do GEMA royalties work?+

Artyfile music IS registered with GEMA and all collecting societies for global monitoring. The composer royalty side (the GEMA share) is paid by Artyfile out of the subscription pool. The master-rights side (the Artyfile share) is what funds artists directly. From your perspective as a listener, both are fully covered — there are no additional GEMA fees.

Where do the artists come from?+

World-class musicians: London Symphony Orchestra, Abbey Road session players, top international soloists, contemporary composers including Artyfile founder Paul Lorenz. The full artist roster is at artyfile.com/about.
