Spotify HiFi (Lossless): what you get and what you don’t

Spotify’s long-announced HiFi tier arrived in September 2025 as “Lossless”: Premium subscribers can stream FLAC up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz at no extra cost, on devices connected by cable or Wi-Fi rather than Bluetooth.

For years “Spotify HiFi” was a promise. Since 10 September 2025 it is a setting. Here is what Spotify Lossless actually delivers, how to switch it on, where the limits are — and when a WAV service like Artyfile Stream is the better addition.

What Spotify Lossless is

Spotify streams up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC to Premium subscribers, rolled out to more than 50 markets including Germany and Austria by October 2025, with no surcharge. FLAC is lossless compression: it decodes to exactly the same audio as the original file, so 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC and a WAV of the same master sound identical. What Spotify does not offer is higher sample rates — Apple Music, Amazon Music Unlimited, TIDAL and Qobuz go up to 192 kHz.

How to turn it on — and why you may not hear it

Lossless is off by default. In the app open your profile → Settings & privacy → Media quality and choose Lossless for Wi-Fi, mobile data and/or downloads; you have to do this on every device. A “Lossless” badge then appears in Now Playing.

Bluetooth headphones and speakers cannot carry it: Spotify itself notes that Bluetooth lacks the bandwidth, so the signal is compressed again before transmission. To hear the difference you need wired headphones, a USB DAC, or a Spotify Connect speaker on Wi-Fi.

Spotify Lossless or a WAV service?

If you want your whole library in better quality, Spotify Lossless is the easy upgrade you already pay for. Artyfile Stream answers a different question: it streams the label Artyfile’s own 850+ recordings — orchestral, cinematic, classical, pop covers and folk, played by real musicians — as the uncompressed WAV studio master, at 44.1 or 48 kHz and up to 24-bit, and pays the rights holders at least €0.03 per counted stream. Use it next to Spotify for the recordings where provenance and fair pay matter.

Questions

Does Spotify have HiFi now?
Yes. Spotify launched it as “Lossless” on 10 September 2025: Premium subscribers can stream FLAC up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz at no extra cost. It has to be switched on under Settings & privacy → Media quality on each device.
Why can’t I hear Spotify Lossless on my Bluetooth headphones?
Bluetooth does not have enough bandwidth for lossless audio, so the signal is compressed before it reaches the headphones. Use wired headphones, a USB DAC or a Wi-Fi Spotify Connect speaker.
Is FLAC better than WAV?
No — both are lossless. FLAC compresses the file without discarding audio and decodes to the same samples as WAV. Differences in sound come from the master and the sample rate, not from FLAC versus WAV.
What does Artyfile Stream add if I already have Spotify Lossless?
The label Artyfile’s studio recordings as uncompressed WAV masters (44.1 or 48 kHz, up to 24-bit), user-centric pay with at least €0.03 per counted stream, and a private My Music locker for your own files. Plans start at €9.90 for 100 streams a month.
